It was an exciting game, and it's an iconic saying, but it doesn't feel right to see a picture of the Detroit Red Wings with "A Great Day for Hockey" written on it.
But that's what NHL.com did.
The saying does fit. It was a great game and the Winter Classic does give the NHL some much needed positive exposure.
But it's also the marketing slogan for the Pittsburgh Penguins. It's Badger Bob Johnson's most famous line. It was painted on the ice at the Igloo. It's associated with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Though, I guess if you were going to steal the slogan for something, this year's Winter Classic is a game that deserves it. The game was a fast-paced, hard-hitting, high scoring affair. It was the perfect game for a non-hockey fan to watch. While last year's game, with the huge crowd and the snow blowing and the Sidney Crosby game winner, was more storybook than this year's Winter Classic, the game today was a much better showcase for hockey. It really was a great game.
But "A Great Day for Hockey" written over a photo of the Red Wings celebrating? It just looks wrong.
