Welcome to the Team: Eric Godard

Part Two of my look at the new members of the Pittsburgh Penguins:

ERIC GODARD

In Eric Godard, much like Matt Cooke, the Penguins have gone for a cheaper alternative. He appears to be a waste on offense or defense, but he'll stick up for his teammates. It also looks like the fights that he is in are more of a reaction to something that just happened on the ice and less of the pre-determined, Georges Laraques type. Welcome to the team!

Welcome to the Team: Matt Cooke

Part One of my look at the new members of the Pittsburgh Penguins:

Cooke looks to be a cheaper alternative to Jarko Ruutu. He was a fan favourite in Vancouver and should add some grit to the Pens. Welcome to the team! Continue reading...

2008-2009 Schedule is Released

The NHL schedule has was released today.

The Penguins' schedule looks like this:

http://penguins.nhl.com/team/app?service=page&page=SubseasonSchedule

Games of interest? Easily Tuesday November 11th at Detroit and Sunday, February 3rd when the Wings return to the Igloo. I hope Hossa is ready for the boos that will await him in a game that will likely be seen nationwide on NBC (it's a 3pm Sunday start.)

Also, I will miss ending the season against your own division. I made for a very interesting stretch run.

I do however like the seven game homestand at the end of March/early April. And while the division games would have been more interesting towards the end of the season, playing the Islanders, Hurricanes, Lightning and Panthers towards the end could be in the Pens' favour.

The release of the schedule make me anxious for hockey season to begin. I can't wait until the puck drops on Saturday October 3rd in Sweden.

The good news for Pens' fans is that, thanks to the Sweden games and the run to the Stanley Cup Finals, the Pens have the shortest offseason in the entire league and therefore the fans have the shortest wait without hockey. The Wings open the season on October 9th against Toronto where Hossa will get to see the banner raised.

I wonder if the short offseason combined with the international travel will have any impact on the Pens. Likely not, but I remember Brian Burke not being too happy last year when the Ducks were in a similar situation. The 2007-2008 schedule saw the Ducks open the season with two games in London, England. There were only three days between the England games and their first game in North America. The Penguins have a six day break between the Sweden games and their home opener against New Jersey.

I don't think it will be a factor and, besides, Brian Burke complains a lot. Continue reading...

An Open Letter

Jaromir, all is forgotten.

The "dying alive" on your side, the constant booing on ours.

We can make this work. We can do it.

Together.

This has always been your home. That Hossa thing was just a fling. What we have together is real. I can tell there's still feelings between us. We just need to put the last few years aside and remember the good times. The Stanley Cups. The scoring titles. The mullet.

Please come home.

Hossa signs with Red Wings, Slaps Penguins in the Face

“I want to have a best chance to win the Stanley Cup. I feel like Detroit is the team.”
- Marian Hossa

Yes, I haven't written anything in a while, but what happened today has prompted me to.

Screw you Marian Hossa. You want the easiest route to the Stanley Cup. That's all. You don't want "the best chance," you want what's easiest. In Pittsburgh you'd be on the first line and you'd have to work for it. In Detroit you're "secondary scoring" and "depth."

Screw you.

If you wanted to leave, you should have said something earlier. Don't give us bullshit about wanting to play for a contender. You didn't want a contender. You only wanted one team: Detroit. And that's fine. But you should have said so earlier. We wouldn't have wasted our time.

But what's done is done. Ray Shero was right, Hossa's gone and there's no point in talking about him.

But you haven't seen the last of the Pittsburgh Penguins Marian.
I have this feeling that sometime next June you'll be in the Stanley Cup finals, awaiting your date with destiny, and a group of black and gold party crashers will show up and ruin your night and make your life miserable.

Because Hossa, winning the Stanley Cup is NEVER easy, no matter what you're telling yourself today. Continue reading...
