Game Recap: Penguins 5 - Hurricanes 2

Petr Sykora scored two goals and Sidney Crosby had four assists as the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 5-2. Crosby is now only two points behind Evgeni Malkin for the NHL scoring lead. Malkin had two assists last night.

It was a good game for the Penguins, and Dany Sabourin played a great third period to make sure the team didn't blow another lead in the third period. The Penguins scored two of their goals on the powerplay, which had been lacking recently.

The race between Malkin and Crosby for scoring lead has been exciting. The two have risen to levels that are far beyond most of the league and it's incredible to watch these two young stars compete. It was good to see Sykora and Satan score, as scoring from Malkin and Crosby's respective wingers has been down recently.

Chris Minard and Janne Pesonen were relative non-factors but they didn't have much ice time. Pesonen only played 5:54, the second least on the team. Only Eric Godard played less, and he only played 8 seconds less. There must be a reason for that. Either Therrien doesn't believe Pesonen can be trusted with additional ice time, or Pesonen himself hasn't shown that he wants to play. It's a strange situation with him as he is called up frequently (three time this season so far) but he is never given a serious chance when he's on the team.

Last night's game was Petr Sykora's 38th two-goal game. He has never scored a hat trick in his NHL career.

The Penguins play in Ottawa on Saturday.
