December 9th - NHL News from Around the League

The NHL has begun the build up for the 2009 NHL Winter Classic in Chicago. The truck containing the the equipment that will be used to make the rink began its journey across the United States yesterday, for some reason leaving from Mobile, Alabama.

Also yesterday, the NHL's Board of Governors met to discuss how the ongoing economic crisis will affect the NHL. Reportedly the outlook is not good. The NHL is currently in a hiring freeze, but it does not expect to eliminate staff at this point.

The NHL also discussed the possibility of becoming involved in the Champions Hockey league in Europe, with the eventual goal being a game between the Stanley Cup Champions and the European Champions at the conclusion of both seasons.

Kris Versteeg of the Chicago Blackhawks was suspended and Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville was fined after Versteeg instigated a fight with less than a minute left in the Blackhawks 7-1 victory over Phoenix on Sunday.

The Dallas Stars' management team will meet tomorrow to discuss Sean Avery's future with the team. Seriously, are they actually surprised that Avery is acting like an obnoxious jerk? What did they expect when they signed him in the off-season?

One of Tampa Bay's off-season signings Radim Vrbata will be leaving the team immediately to play in the Czech Republic. The Lightning will not be responsible for the remainder of his three-year, $9 million contract if Vrbata does not return to the NHL. Chris Gratton, who also re-signed with the Lightning this summer, has been waived by the team. A part of me enjoys watching Pittsburgh South fail, though I feel bad for Gary Roberts.

The Montreal Canadiens opened their new practice facility yesterday. Reportedly it's quite good. No word as to whether the fans in Montreal rioted to celebrate the new building.

Jason Blake had three points last night as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the New York Islanders.

The NHL Three Stars for the week ending December 7th are Nashville Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne, Chicago Blackhawks forward Jonathan Toews and Ottawa Senators forward Jason Spezza.
