December 8th - NHL News from Around the League

First of all, the 2pm/et start for the Penguins/Senators game totally threw us off on Saturday and we missed the game entirely, which is why there was no preview or recap. Our apologies.

In Penguins news, defenseman Ben Lovejoy has been called up from the AHL. Likely he will be stepping in for Hal Gill, who injured his shoulder in the Ottawa game. What the Penguins really need at this point is another injured defenseman. Ray Shero is looking like a genius for maintaining the team's defensive depth when it looked obvious that we had too many defensemen. Phillipe Boucher and forward Mike Zigomanis are also both day-to-day with injuries and Tyler Kennedy has been placed on injured reserve for four to six weeks.

Toronto Maple Leafs' rookie defenseman Schenn will miss two weeks with a leg injury suffered on a hit by Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin.

For those wondering, the NHL All-Star Game Boycott is still on. The Facebook group continues to grow every day.

At the NHL Winter Classic in Chicago the NHL will be running a contest to see who can spot the lucky player that doesn't have a Reebok logo on his jersey.

The Chicago Blackhawks lit up the Phoenix Coyotes last night, outscoring them seven to one. The goal horn in the United Center actually broke after the fifth goal.

Ryan Getzlaf scored two goals as the Anaheim Ducks defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-3.

The Colorado Avalanche extended their winning streak against the Vancouver Canucks to eight with a 5-4 shootout victory last night. The Canucks have not defeated the Avalanche in over a year. Their last win against Colorado was on November 9th, 2007.
