The old "Brendan Shanahan to the Penguins" rumour is back again, according to Eklund. The rumour was talked about a lot during the offseason and the beginning of the regular season. Rumour has it that 39-year-old winger would either like to remain with the Rangers or play for a contender. Reportedy he approached Ray Shero a while ago about playing for the Penguins.
I don't think really think it would be a good idea for the Penguins to go this route. Shanahan is past his days as a scoring threat and I think the idea of veteran leadership is no longer necessary for this team. Yes, Gary Roberts did some wonderful things for the organization when he was here, but I think the team has grown up and they can lead themselves now. They can take the lessons that Roberts taught them, combined with the experience they gained in their run to the finals last year, and they can lead themselves.
This team belongs to Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin and the guys that are currently here. I don't think Shanahan would have much to add.
Also, he will likely be looking at a contract somewhere in the range of $1.5 - $1.8 million/year. The Penguins are quite close to the cap and I would like them to use whatever space they have to give them some flexibility at the trade deadline.
I don't think Brendan Shanahan will be wearing black and gold anytime soon.
