Review: The Former Penguins

A big deal was made over the players that left the Penguins during the offseason.  No doubt it was disappointing to see players we once cheered for turn and leave for new teams.

Today we take a look at how those who left the Penguins in the offseason have been doing so far on their new teams.  Yes, it's still early, but it's worth a look.

Ty Conklin: Signed a one year contract with the Detroit Red Wings on July 1st, 2008
This season: 4-3-1 / GAA 3.19 / SV% .897

Adam Hall: Signed a three year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on July 1st, 2008
This season: GP: 10, 1 goal, 1 assist, +2, o PIM

Gary Roberts: Signed a one year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on June 30th, 2008
This season: GP: 10, o goals, 0 assists, -4, 2 PIM

Georges Laraque: Signed a three year conrtact with the Montreal Canadiens on July 3rd, 2008
This season: GP: 4, 0 goals, 0 assists, -2, 19 PIM

Jarkko Ruutu: Signed a three year contract with the Ottawa Senators on July 2nd, 2008
This season: GP: 11, 2 goals, 2 assists, +3, 8 PIM

Ryan Malone: Signed a seven year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on June 30th, 2008
This season: GP: 10, 2 goals, 0 assists, -1, 24 PIM

Marian Hossa: Signed a one year contract with the Detroit Red Wings on July 2nd, 2008
This season: GP: 11, 6 goals, 9 assists, +7, 12 PIM

Obviously Hossa has the best numbers out of that group, which is to be expected.  It seemed to take him a few games to get his groove back in Detroit, but once he did he has been on fire.  Hossa has 9 points in the last 5 games and is tied with Sidney Crosby for 3rd in league scoring.   The Red Wings have 16 points in 11 games and are in second in the Western Conference, two points behind San Jose.

Ryan Malone hasn't come close to matching his production last year, and I don't believe he ever will.  Malone greatly benefitted from being on a line with Malkin and Sykora and used his record season to earn himself a big contract with Tampa Bay.  I wouldn't say he has been a disappointment, but he is coming back down to earth after a great campaign last year.

Jarkko Ruutu seems to be fitting in quite well with his new team.  After Hossa he is leading the former Penguins group in assists, points, plus/minus, and is tied with Ryan Malone in goals scored.  The Senators are struggling this year, however.  They only have 10 points in 11 games and are ranked 11th in the Eastern Conference, one point behind Tampa Bay.

Conklin, Roberts, Laraque and Hall are all playing as expected.

Tomorrow we take a look at their replacements as we will review how the new Penguins have performed thus far.
