NHL News from Around the League - Nov. 3rd, 2008

There is a silver lining to the recent Penguins road trip. Their losses to the Rangers and the Sharks mean they lost to the top two teams in hockey. The Sharks won their fourth straight last night, defeating Colorado 5-3. They now sit at the top of the Western Conference with 20 points (one behind the Rangers) but they have played two fewer games than the Blueshirts. Both teams lead in the league in wins with 10 each.

The Carolina Hurricanes scored three goals in four minutes to come from behind and defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs. The quick offensive display was a reversal of the previous game for the Leafs. On Saturday night in New York the Leafs scored five goals in just over five minutes to defeat the Rangers.

On the injury front, New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur will miss at least one game with a bruised elbow. The injury will stop Brodeur's career-high regular season game starting streak at 51 games.

New York Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro will miss four to six weeks of action after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery on Friday. DiPietro also had knee surgery in June and hip surgery in March.

The Chicago Blackhawks will wear their new third jersey for the first time tonight. The team posted a schedule online of third jersey dates, with tonight's game against Colorado as the first. Credit goes to Icethetics for the find. The Penguins will introduce their third jersey on Wednesday. The jersey will be blue and will be similar to the ones worn during the Winter Classic in Buffalo.

UPDATE: Alexander Ovechkin has returned to the Washington Capitals after spending a week in Russia. He practiced with the team this morning.
