The New York Islanders defeated the Eastern Conference All-Star team yesterday, 4-3 in a shootout. The strangest part of the game was Ryan O'Byrne's goal. The Canadiens player scored with less than 5 minutes remaining in the third period to tie the game at 3. Unfortunately O'Byrne scored on his own net, and he tied the game for the Islanders. I'm not sure what was funnier, O'Byrne clutching his head in anguish after he scored, or the Islanders players celebrating the goal. Watch.
I wonder if he'll make the All-Star team.
Numerous players had two goal games last night, all of them scoring on the opposing team's goal. Mike Knuble had two as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Dallas Stars, Ville Peltonen's two goals helped the Florida Panthers defeat the Carolina Hurricanes, Teemu Selanne scored two on the power play as the Anaheim Ducks beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-1, and Cal Clutterbuck (the coolest name in hockey) scored twice as the Minnesota Wild defeated the Washington Capitals 4-3.
John Zeiler of the Los Angeles Kings has been suspended for three games following a boarding incident against Adam Foote of Colorado. In the QMJHL, Patrick Roy's son Frederick has been suspended for 15 games for high sticking an opposing player in the face during a stoppage in play. This suspension comes eight months after Roy's other son Jonathan was suspended for skating across the ice to attack the opposing team's goaltender. Patrick Roy, the team's coach, was also suspended in that incident.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo and forward Alex Steen to the St. Louis Blues for forward Lee Stempniak. This seems like a good trade for both teams. Stempniak should add some offense to the Leafs and Colaiacovo and Steen have a tonne of potential that will get a fresh start and a chance to shine through in a less-scrutinized market in St. Louis.
Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo is now listed as "week-to-week" with an adductor strain in his groin. The Canucks found a way to win their fourth game in a row, even without Luongo, as they defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 in overtime.
In other injury news Florida forward Richard Zednik will miss several weeks with an arm injury he suffered when he was checked into the boards by Carolina defenseman, and former Penguin, Josef Melichar. Of course, almost any injury is better than the one Zednik suffered last season.
And finally, Lemieux is hoping to make a return to the NHL. Of course, that would be Claude Lemieux, who signed a tryout contract with the San Jose Sharks yesterday.
