The Vancouver Canucks will announce the severity of Roberto Luongo's injury later today. Luongo left the first period the Canucks' game in Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon. He appeared to have a "lower body injury" and wasn't putting any weight on his left leg as he was helped from the ice. If he's out for an extended period of time it could be bad news for the Canucks.
Speaking of injured goalies, Tampa Bay's Mike Smith will also miss time with a "lower body injury." He miss yesterday's game against New Jersey and it's not known how long he will be out of action.
Dainus Zubrus made a little New Jersey Devils history last night as he tied a team record by scoring four goals in that game against Tampa Bay. The Devils went on to win 7-3.
The Lightning were one of five teams to debut their new third jersey over the weekend. The Coyotes, Senators, Sharks, and Kings all had new looks this weekend. Four out of the five new jerseys are black. The Senators and Kings both used an extremely inventive "Back in Black" campaign to market their jerseys, despite the fact that the Kings standard home jersey is also black. I guess "Back in Silver" doesn't roll off the tongue as well. The Sharks are the only team to have their jersey co-branded with a corporation's newest products, however.
And the Mats Sundin saga continues as Eugene Melnyk, Ottawa Senators' owner, met with Sundin in California on Friday. The Canucks, Canadiens and Ducks have all shown interest in the indecisive center. A decision should be made by late 2012.
